YAKIMA -- Thanksgiving holiday travel is off to a good start in our area. Travelers can expect smooth sailing whether they travel by air or road.

The rush is on to get out of town this holiday weekend. Horizon Air says the Yakima Airport was very busy in the morning. Later flights were not as full.

"I went online and I just purchased them, took a little finageling but I wasn't too stressed about it," says Hilary Davis, who was flying to California.

One traveler just needed to get over Snoqualmie Pass, and chose flying over driving to get there.

"This is very convenient, just to fly over the pass because it's a safe way to travel and reassured you'll be there," says Brook Braden, who's headed to Aberdeen.

Going to the airport doesn't mean everyone's flying out of there, when the Airporter Shuttle is also an option.

"It'd be easier instead of driving over the traffic," says Henry Floyd, who's headed to Issaquah.

For those driving out of town, lower gas prices will make the trip cheaper. Mother Nature is also cooperating. The weather should be good overall for those driving over Snoqualmie Pass.

"It happens occasionally, not very often. I think it's going to make the whole experience a lot better," says Sean Farina, who's headed to Mukilteo with his family.

Still, some don't want to chance traveling over Snoqualmie.

"It could be nice going over, and Friday come back, Saturday, and be closed, nasty, chains, so you never know this time of year. This is a pretty safe bet going to Tri-cities," says Richard Skiens.

The Department of Transportation says even if the weather's nice, it can change on a dime. It's always a good idea to check highway conditions before you hit the road.

The D.O.T. expects traffic on Interstate 90 to be heavy through Thanksgiving Day, and even more busier on Sunday as people head home. In addition to checking our websites for road information, you can also call 5-1-1 on your cell phone to get the latest weather and highway conditions.
