YAKIMA --
An East Valley High School teacher is charged with having sex with a student. Michele Taylor, 31, has been a high school phys. ed teacher since 2004. The allegations came out over the summer, and the prosecutor's office filed charges late this afternoon. Deputy prosecutor Sam Chen says Taylor faces one charge of 1st degree sexual misconduct, and two counts of communication with a minor for immoral purposes. He says the communication was with the teenager she's accused of sleeping with and another student.
Taylor is the mother of triplets, and her husband is also a phys. ed teacher for the East Valley District.
"The community went through a big thing when they had their triplets because they were all premature," says a former East Valley student who graduated in May.
He wanted to remain anonymous, but he says the Taylor family is very well-loved by the community, and many can't believe the allegations.
The East Valley Superintendent referred us to the district's lawyer Michael Patterson. Patterson says a student alerted the district to the charges in June and that the sheriff's office was called immediately. He says Taylor was put on leave that same day.
"She's still on administrative leave," says Patterson. "If she's found guilty or if she pleads guilty she'll automatically be terminated."
County Prosecutor Jim Hagarty says his office decided not to arrest Taylor because she has no criminal history. She'll have to appear in court in mid-October.
We talked to Taylor's husband tonight, he told us that the family has no comment.
We'll have more information for you tomorrow when the charging documents are released.
