YAKIMA -- A Yakima county inmate who escaped two weeks ago while on yard duty, is back behind bars.
Yakima county sheriff's deputies found Stephen Paul Boren hiding in the kitchen of a clean and sober house on East Arlington Avenue. Boren was classified as a non-violent, low-risk inmate, and was allowed to work outside the downtown jail unsupervised.
The corrections department only lets local prisoners in the program. The fact that these inmates are from the valley makes it easier to catch them if they escape. Boren told deputies how he was able to avoid capture for so long.
"He was claiming that he was moving around from place to place, including hiding out, in small camps near the Greenway area, along the river, so that's why he was more difficult to find," says deputy Aaron Wuitschick.
Boren had two months to go on his sentence for identity theft and other crimes. Now he could face another year behind bars for escape. Two people are facing misdemeanor charges for allegedly helping Boren avoid arrest.
