What is compounding?
Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of making customized medications from raw materials. Its practice dates back to the origins of pharmacy, but its practice has evolved over the years. In the early 1900s nearly all prescriptions were compounded by a pharmacist. In the 1950s and 1960s more medications made commercially available through drug companies, and the role of the pharmacist changed from preparers of medicine to dispensers of manufactured medicine. In the last two decades, compounding has experienced a resurgence. Modern technology, extensive research, and innovated techniques have allowed pharmacists to better meet the needs of patients through customized medications.

What can you compound?
We compound customized medications based on a physician’s order. We can compound just about anything! We do it all from medicated lollipops to sterile injections.

Can you flavor medications?
Absolutely! We are able to add flavors like butternut, tangerine, and pina colada to your medicine so that it is more palatable to you, your kids, and even your pets. Many pharmacies offer flavoring services, but only a true compounding pharmacy is able to ensure that the flavor being added will not change the chemical integrity of the medication.

Can you compound medications for animals?
Yes, we make customized medications for many animals. They are some of our favorite patients. Many times doses need to be adjusted for an animal. After all a Chihuahua is not the same size as a Great Dane and needs a different medication dose. For cat lovers, have you ever given a cat a pill? We make it easy to give your pet its medication. We also add pet-friendly flavors like beef, chicken, and fish.

Will insurance cover my compounded medication?
We always try to bill insurance for compounded medications, and we are usually successful. Whether your insurance covers your compounded medication and what your co-pay would be is dependent on your insurance company. Even if your insurance does not cover the compounded medication, we are able to keep our cash prices very competitive and many times it is no more expensive than the cost of co-pay!
