Labor Day Irony: The Ones That Have to Work
Grover Cleveland established Labor Day as an official holiday in 1894 to recognize the working class of America-- While some people are traveling home or shopping for labor day deals-- many people have to ironically work during this holiday.
"I work on Labor Day and I don't think it's about what day it is and what day im going to be working, it's about coming in and being happy with what i do," said target employee Andrew Strom.
"the rodeo is going on today so there is no getting in anywhere to shop today," said Ellensburg resident Ginny Blackson
Blackson is now part of the estimated 35 million Americans that traveled somewhere this weekend which naturally means 35 million Americans are headed back home-- one man traveling home to California thinks the backroads are the answer to beating traffic.
"Theres nothing out there so far--in fact this is the first freeway we've been on...It was great we had everything to our selves," said Ron Harrington
Maybe you are like Blackson who escaped from Ellensburg to do some shopping in Yakima avoiding the Labor Day rodeo crowds.
"If you've waited until labor day in ellensburg you're going to be competing with the cowboys so we came on down south," said Blackson
A survey by RetailMeNot.com found that 65-percent of Americans planned to shop over the three day weekend--up from last years survey totals of 56-percent.
Retail giants recognize Labor Day as one of the four large holiday shopping weekends of the year.
USA Today reports target employs the sixth largest workforce in america-- 2012 Census Bureau numbers show the retail sector makes up the largest portion of the working class with an estimated 4.5 million people.
But retail workers today at Target said they aren't phased working on a day that celebrates taking a break.
"Worked on Labor Day, I've worked on Black Friday and I work on every other day I love doing what Im doing," said Strom
With a high amount of store traffic compared to a typical Monday because of Labor Day sales--everyone puts in a helping hand to assist the consumer.
"For the guests to be happy shopping on this nice day-- just enjoy it and be safe," said Matt Calahan
