Pedestrian Struck at 16th Avenue and Grant
On May 22, 2014 at 1504 hours, Yakima Police Officers responded to the area of 16th Avenue and Grant Street in reference to a car/pedestrian collision. When officers arrived, the 16 year old female pedestrian was being treated by medical personnel and citizens who had stopped to render aid. The female was transported to Yakima Memorial Hospital.
The investigation revealed the pedestrian had exited a Yakima City Transit bus that stopped in the outside northbound lane of travel. When the pedestrian exited the bus, she ran west across 16th Avenue from the east side of the street. Elena Bassett was driving north on 16th Avenue in the inside northbound lane of travel in a 2011 GMC when the pedestrian ran in front of her vehicle. Bassett was not able to stop and struck the pedestrian in the roadway. The pedestrian was not crossing the street at a crosswalk or at an intersection.
The pedestrian was treated at the hospital for non life-threatening injuries. She was still being treated at the time of this press release. The pedestrian’s name was being withheld at this time pending the notification of family.
The Yakima Police Traffic Unit is investigating this collision.
