Hanford Laboratory Receives Star Safety Status from Energy Department
RICHLAND – The Department of Energy (DOE) recognized Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL) International, Inc. for its outstanding safety program at the 222-S Laboratory Facility on the Hanford Site by awarding the company Star Status in DOE’s Voluntary Protection Program for the third consecutive time. The elite Star Status recognizes excellence in occupational safety and health protection for contractors at DOE sites.
“We would like to congratulate the management team and employees of ATL for its pursuit of excellence in safety and health and for achieving continued recognition at the Star Status level in the DOE Voluntary Protection Program,” said Ellen Mattlin, DOE Office of River Protection Tank Farms Programs Division Director.
In 2005, ATL was the first small business to be awarded a prime contract at the Hanford Site. In April 2008, DOE awarded the woman-owned, small business its initial Star Status, marking the first time in DOE’s nationwide complex that a small-business prime contractor achieved this honor. ATL was recertified as a Star Status site in March 2011 and again with this recent recertification.
“ATL is proud to receive three consecutive DOE Star Status awards during our tenure in operating a nuclear analytical laboratory,” said Dr. Jou Hwang, ATL Project Director. “This achievement would not have been possible without support from the Office of River Protection’s leadership, as well as our strong working relationship with the 222-S Lab Facility Steward, Washington River Protection Solutions. The support and assistance provided to an emergent small prime contractor such as ATL is greatly appreciated.”
The Voluntary Protection Program was established in 1994 and is identical to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration Voluntary Protection Program, except that participation is open to contractors employed at Department of Energy-owned facilities. Recipients are re-evaluated every three to five years to retain Star Status certification.
