Catholic Charities of Central Washington hosts a special speaker this afternoon.

Father Larry Snyder held a discussion with locals about the poverty issue in the Yakima Valley.

Snyder is a national expert on poverty -- he recently attended the 3rd annual National Poverty Summit in Washington D.C. and is now sharing possible solutions that can be implemented in the valley.

He also listened to locals share their stories of success by working through Catholic Charities.

One woman shared how she wanted to create a better future for her children.

"When they're growing up, they're going to know that it's normal to have a house, it's normal to go to school, it's normal to not be around people that are on drugs," said Yamilent Miranda, "They see a normal side of life."

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 22% of Yakima County lives below the poverty level -- the state average is about 13%.
