A total of five people are dead, and two others injured after a Pendleton house fire Sunday morning.

Fire investigators determined that no accelerant existed at the scene.  They were also able to determine that the fire started on the exterior front porch of the residence before progressing very rapidly throughout the structure due to breaching or opening of door(s) and window(s). Additional investigative steps were taken to ensure the fire was not caused by illicit drug production as had been rumored.  No indicium of illegal activity was discovered in/around the residence.

Representatives from the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office, Oregon State Police Arson Division and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called in to assist in the investigation, and this morning, the scene was turned over to insurance investigators.

The five bodies were recovered from the fire scene, and transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office where autopsy are expected to begin today. The positive identification of the adults will be much timelier than the children because of medical and dental records as well as DNA. It could take months to identify the children.

The two surviving victims who reportedly jumped from windows are still at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland, OR.

The case is still being actively investigated.
