CH2M Hill Hosts Zero Waste Picnic
About 2,000 CH2M HILL employees and their family members enjoyed a late summer picnic today, but surprisingly their dining didn't generate any waste.
The company says they been bringing their employees together for quite some time.
In the past, a summer picnic like this would require 20 to 30 trash cans, but this leader in eco-friendly practices thought they could do better than that.
Last year they developed a pilot program that sorts and recycles most of the items that traditionally would be thrown away.
Their caterer now reuses condiment jars, plastic ties on hamburger buns now get used by children for counting activities, and materials like aluminum foil that could only be used and thrown away have been replaced.
CH2M HILL officials say these practices today will divert more than 1,000 pounds of garbage away from local landfills.
