Hanford workers may start receiving furlough notices Wednesday
Thousands of Hanford employees may receive furlough notices starting tomorrow because of the government shutdown, according to TRIDEC.
Gary Petersen, VP of Hanford Programs with TRIDEC, says 9,000 workers at Hanford and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory may receive furlough notices, and those furloughs would most likely go into effect next week.
TRIDEC employees have been contacting congressional offices to ask America's leaders to find a solution before any furloughs could go into effect.
But they have had no success so far, and employees say Congress needs to act soon - either today or tomorrow, to prevent these issues.
Petersen says if these furloughs happen, it would have a tremendous effect on our community.
"If you lay off 9,000 out of a potential 14,000 or so workers, you're gonna feel the effects all the way across the community. I don't care whether it's Costco, the Red Robin, you're gonna feel the effects" said Petersen.
Petersen says if the furloughs do happen, he hopes they won't last long.
