Yakima Fatal Fire

An apartment fire in Yakima early this morning leaves a local veteran dead.

Firefighters arrive to the Starlight Apartments just after 4 a.m. this morning to find a second story unit engulfed in flames.

Upon entering the apartment, crews find 63-year-old Douglas Jewett dead near the living room.

The fire destroyed all but one room in the unit, smoke and water damage also extended to the unit below, all resulting in $80,000 worth of damage.

It remains unclear whether the smoke detector in the apartment was ever working and firefighters said they never heard it going off.

An autopsy is scheduled for Jewett at 10 a.m. tomorrow.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The coroner said Jewett's death appears to be accidental.
