Wa-Hi JROTC Hosts National Rifle Qualifying Match
A group of students at Walla Walla High School have another national title in their sights, but will they stay on target?
Members of the Walla Walla High School JROTC Rifle Team competed in a qualifying match for the U.S. Army National Air Rifle Championship Sunday.
A class of precision shooters and another group of shooters in the sporter class competed in timed sessions.
The top ten teams in the nation are chosen to compete at the national championship held at Fort Benning, Georgia in February.
It's a trip the Wa-Hi team successfully made last year and won and a trip this year's team hopes to make again.
Wa-Hi Senior and rifle team member Sarah Jameson says, "I feel as though we should be able to make it again just because we've broken that barrier and we made it once before. So we've had that pressure and that experience and I feel we have the team that can make it again this year."
Teams from Oregon City and Spokane also competed in Sunday's qualifying match.
Each student also competed on an individual basis -- as the top ten individuals not chosen on a team also have a shot of winning a trip to compete in the national championship.
