The community of Zillah honors Jeff Charbonneau -- recently named National Teacher of the Year.

Dozens of people gathered at tonight's celebration at Zillah High School's Performing Arts Center

Last month, Charbonneau -- who teaches architecture, chemistry, engineering, and physics, was named National Teacher of the Year and was later recognized by President Obama at a White House ceremony.

Governor Jay Inslee also honored Charbonneau at tonight's ceremony, highlighting the importance of education in the state.

"His ability to engage students in science, technology, engineering and math is unsurpassed in the whole country," said Inslee, "We need to help teachers across the state of Washington have the ability to do just what Jeff has done at Zillah High School. We're dedicated to that."

In June, Charbonneau will spend the next year as a national ambassador, making appearances at about 150 events throughout the United States and overseas.
