Driver Eludes Troopers near Pendleton, Ends in Fiery Crash

A Pendleton man is in custody after taking troopers on a high speed chase along Interstate 84 yesterday afternoon then crashing his car into a field which caught fire.

27-year-old Zecharia Ayers failed to stop and proceeded to elude troopers for 36 minutes for more than 50 miles.

He crashed his vehicle on private property off of U.S. Highway 37, where his vehicle caught fire and he fled on foot.

Ayers was soon caught by troopers and arrested.  He faces numerous charges including reckless driving, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.

The property owner, along with troopers and deputies, were able to quickly move the burning vehicle out of the brush to prevent the fire from spreading.
