The man accused of killing 70-year-old David Lee Childs in downtown Yakima last week appears in court this afternoon.

Police arrested 34 year old Armando Vieyra yesterday afternoon.

According to the arrest affidavit, police were able to trace Vieyra to his home through photos taken by a witness the night of the killing.

Police state that Vieyra admitted to meeting with Childs that night and they had engaged in sexual activity.

However, the suspect told police he thought the two were moving too fast and pushed Childs down after some unwanted touching.

Vieyra told police he left after that and did not kill Childs.

Childs was found with 38 puncture wounds with signs of blunt-force trauma.

"The level of violence involved in this murder certainly gives indicators to law enforcement or certainly raises our suspicion as to things may have happened before the murder that led to this level of violence," said Captain Rod Light.

Vieyra faces charges of first degree murder and is being held on a one million dollar bail.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Childs tonight on the first block of North Front Street -- that will start at 9:30.
