Yakima Co. Sheriff's Office investigate body found in trunk

The body of a Sunnyside man found in a vehicle at a remote location in Yakima County yesterday afternoon launches a possible homicide investigation.

Shortly after noon yesterday, the Yakima Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible homicide.  The Yakama Nation Police Department had initially responded to a call of a possible body in a vehicle at a remote location on Yakama Reservation land.  When they arrived at the location they found an abandoned vehicle with a body in the trunk. The investigation was later turned over to the Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle was located off Hwy 97 at about milepost 51 on the Oak Springs Road.  The body in the trunk was that of an Hispanic male in his early 20’s.  Further investigation identified the victim as 23-year-old Alberto Gabriel Martinez of Sunnyside.  The vehicle that the victim was found in is a green 1998 Honda Civic.  The owner of the vehicle is the victim’s girlfriend.  The victim was last seen Thursday night.

The cause of death has not been determined.  An autopsy has not yet been scheduled.
