Riding For a Worthy Cause
Alex and Helen LaVoie are on the last leg of their cross-country bicycle ride, raising funds for wounded U.S. veterans.
Alex is 70 years old, and very close to the end of a 4000 mile journey on his recumbent style bicycle.
He and his wife of 47 years, Helen, started in Florida back on February 23rd...
He's been riding hard, sometimes 50-60 miles per day, with wife Helen driving their RV behind him - all to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Wounded Warrior is a nonprofit organization helping severely injured men and women in the military, who have returned stateside after combat.
LaVoie says for him, it's been a passion infused project and something the couple has planned for almost three years.
Both say teamwork is key.
"This is a supported trip. If I was doing it on my own, I'd have to haul my pup tent, food, and whatever I needed for the day. It might not have been possible to do," said Alex.
Helen has some advice too, "Just be sure you're very compatible, that you can live in such cramped spaces for such a long time under fairly stressful conditions."
So far the couple has raised $30, 000 for the cause.
They'll take off again on June 17 for Seattle, the final leg of the journey.
