Tank Farm Contractor Cancels Furloughs
Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) cancels plans for mandatory time off.
The Hanford tank farm contractor had required nonunion workers to take between 2.5 and 6.5 weeks off by the end of summer due to forced federal budget cuts.
However, WRPS received approximately $48 million dollars of additional money already budgeted by the Department of Energy but switched from other projects in a reprogramming process.
That money canceled the furloughs and will be used to rehire 100 union workers, as well as hire some professional positions because of openings caused by retirements.
The $48 million dollars will also go to ramp up waste retrieval from three underground storage tanks.
