Shane, David Win Initial Heats at Columbia Cup

Defending race champion Jimmy Shane won heat 1A at the Columbia Cup Saturday in Kennewick in the U-5 Graham Trucking while defending national champion Steve David won heat 1B in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto.

Shane, who won his first unlimited race on the Columbia a year ago, was able to hold off Jon Zimmerman in the U-9 Red Dot after the first turn of lap one and kept the advantage after that in winning his heat.

While Shane started his heat from lane one on the inside, David employed a different strategy, purposely starting in lane three to test his boats speeed, set up, and handling. That proved successful, as he was able to maneuver past the boats on the inside, take control, and claim victory.
Gold Cup champion Kip Brown in the U-95 Spirit of Qatar/Our Gang Racing finished second in heat 1B.

The boats will run four more three lap heats tomorrow (2A,2B,3A,3B) before the five lap final, which is scheduled for 4:00 PM
