Medal of Honor Recipient Visits CWU
Central Washington University gets a special visit from a war hero today.
Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry visited the campus to help his son Austin enroll in classes for the coming school year.
Petry was on deployment in Afghanistan back in 2008, when he attempted to throw a grenade that landed between him and two other soldiers -- the grenade exploded, saving the soldiers lives, but severing his right hand.
Petry was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions, making him the second recent living recipient from the war in Afghanistan.
"I'm glad that we still have a recipient on active duty," said Petry, "It's always good to have someone wearing the uniform. I hope that more come out because there's a lot to do out there, a lot of people that need to be educated on what the medal represents."
Petry is also the only medal of honor recipient from any branch of service still on active duty.
