Tenants at the Cascade and Senator Apartments in Yakima are given an extra week to vacate their homes.

The city has extended the deadline to vacate the apartments to next Thursday at 5 p.m., in order for the owner to complete work necessary to correct the code violations cited by the city.

The city says the owner has already hired contractors to make the necessary repairs and installations.

Several tenants protested outside City Hall today, expressing their anger with the city's decision to vacate the property.

"You really think it's morally right to put pregnant women and children, disabled elderly and mentally ill people out on the street?!" said Cathy Delaney, "Is that the Yakima that you really want?!"

The deadline was originally set for noon tomorrow, that was extended from the original deadline, which was this past tuesday.
