Special education students in the Yakima area compete on the hardwood today.

Teams from various schools competed in 5 on 5 basketball games at West Valley High School.

The event was put on by local special education teachers to encourage other schools in the area to participate in Special Olympics sporting events.

Teachers also say it gives students the chance to compete without having to travel outside of the Yakima area.

"A lot of competitions are in Cheney, or in Pullman, or on the west side," said special education teacher Lucas Jaeger, "So we wanted to do something local to give students, teachers a chance to try it out and see if they wanted to do the real thing at the big tournaments."

Teachers say they expect to host more local sporting events at high schools throughout the year.
