Longtime YFD Employee Bob Stewart Named Acting Fire Chief

Yakima Deputy Fire Chief Bob Stewart, who has spent his entire professional career with the Yakima Fire Department (“YFD”), has been appointed to serve as Acting Chief once current Chief Dave Willson retires on January 3rd, 2014.

Stewart will assume his role as Acting Chief on January 4th.

City Manager Tony O’Rourke, who appointed Stewart to the position, will evaluate Stewart’s performance over a six-month period after which a decision will be made regarding filling theChief position on a more permanent basis.

Stewart grew up in Salem, Oregon. In February 1988, while he was serving as a Cadet Captain with Marion County Fire District #1, Stewart was hired by the YFD as a Firefighter.

In June 1994, Stewart was promoted to Lieutenant. He became a Shift Captain in February 2001 and was named Training Captain in December that year. Over the next four years, Stewart worked in an acting capacity as both a Deputy Chief and Battalion Chief while primarily serving as a Line Captain. In July 2007, he was promoted to Deputy Chief.

Willson started his firefighting career in 1975, joined the YFD in January 1984, and became
Chief in September 2011. Earlier this month he announced he would retire on the 30th anniversary of the day he was hired by the YFD.
