Fire Tears Through Home

Crews were called out to the 700 block of South 70th Avenue just after 9 a.m., where they found the home engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say a handicapped man, his caretaker and a dog were living in the home, and were able to escape before crews began their attack on the house.

The fire is believed to have started somewhere in the laundry area, where it spread throughout the home burned through most of the interior.

Neighbors say the man had ammunition in his home, and could hear the gunpowder exploding from outside -- however the air was so thick at the time of the fire, some were worried it might spread.

"We didn't know whether or not the trees next door were going to catch on fire, the house next door, then ours," said Tracy Clair, "It was really very scary, just a lot of smoke."

Investigators are still looking into what may have caused the fire, however, they do believe it may have started from a dryer.

Losses are estimated at $95,000.
