Hanford 300 Area Cleanup Plan Issued
The Department of Energy, along with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Washington State Department of Ecology issue a plan for cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater along the Columbia River in Hanford's 300 area.
Much of the plan calls for digging up contaminated soil and waste sites, treating and then disposing of low-level radioactive waste at a landfill located in the center of the Hanford site.
The plan also addresses a cleanup strategy for a section of contaminated groundwater.
Hanford's 300 area covers about 40 square miles and is expected to be cleaned up by fall of 2015.
