Teen Shot While Allegedly Burglarizing a Home
A neighborhood is still upset after Yakima Sheriff's Deputies say one of the homes there was almost burglarized by a teen yesterday morning.
It happened around 9:30 am on North McKinley Road.
Deputies say the family was startled by unusual sounds coming from inside their home -- neighbors tell us the suspect, a 16 year old boy, assaulted the homeowner's wife before before attempting to flee -- that's when the homeowner fired a single shot, hitting the boy.
He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he is listed in serious condition.
One neighbor says the area has been hit hard by teens in the past, and is glad the family was able to protect themselves.
"All of the neighborhoods around here have been burglarized, so no, that doesn't surprise me," said Loretta Olney, "It can be scary, because of their age, they think they can get by with things. Our neighbors have young kids themselves that they need to protect."
Sheriff's deputies say none of the family members were injured during the encounter.
The case remains under investigation, it is unclear what charges will be sought following the investigation.
