Sunnyside man dies from gunshot wound, suspect in custody

A 29-year-old Sunnyside man is dead after being shot in the abdomen this morning.

The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a gunshot victim that had arrived by private vehicle at Sunnyside Community Hospital.  The victim had suffered a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.  Two persons that brought the victim to the hospital were detained by Sunnyside Police officers.

The two told investigators that they had been driving in the Sunnyside/Outlook area when they saw a white car occupied by gang members.  An occupant in the white car fired a shot that struck the victim.  The victim was then transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital, however police learned of several inconsistencies in the story.

Detectives later learned that one of the occupants of the car had fired the shot that struck the victim.  The suspect, a 31 year old Hispanic male from Outlook, was booked at the Yakima County Jail on murder charges.

The victim is identified as 29 year old Roberto Licea of Sunnyside.  An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
