130 kids experience first airplane ride at Martin Field

More than 100 kids got a chance to see what the Walla Walla Valley looks like from the sky Sunday.

Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) pilots gathered at the annual Martin Field open house to show kids how airplanes work and display experimental and antique aircraft.

Dave Cheney, owner of Martin Field, also displayed and took children for rides aboard his 1943 Howard DGA-15P, a single-engine airplane he spent 7 years restoring.

Cheney’s wife, Wilma, says a total of 130 children, ages 8 – 17, experienced their first airplane ride today as part of the EAA Young Eagles Flight program.

The program gives children the opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane.  Flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers.
