Kids in the Yakima School District were allowed to play outside today, even though the department of ecology says the air quality is hazardous.

Yesterday, the school district office issued an advisory for schools to keep their students inside, due to the heavy smoke caused by fires in the area.

That warning was at red level yesterday, and recess was cancelled,  but it has been lowered today and school leaders are confident students will not be harmed by the smoke.

"Today however it's orange. And so, really it's okay for our students to be outside. But always, our principals know better about what students they have in their schools. And if they have students with respiratory issues, they will keep them inside," said Mary Beth Wright.

The heavy smoke is expected to linger in the Kittitas and Yakima County areas through the weekend.
