Students Learn About River System
Hundreds of kids fill a park in Yakima today to learn about their local river systems.
Nearly 500 4th and 5th grade students from across Yakima County attended the Rivers Festival, hosted by the Yakima Greenway Foundation.
Students had the chance to learn about the river system and sustainable practices from 11 different agencies throughout the Yakima County.
Teachers say the event gives students more than just a school day out in the sun.
"It gives them more of an awareness of our area, and how they can be helpful in preserving the river system and the river bank environment surrounding it," said Selah Intermediate School Teacher Colleen Wilson.
The Yakima Greenway Foundation has hosted the event every year for the past 15 years.
