An elderly man is dead after his car collides with a semi-truck this morning in Yakima.

It happened around 8 a.m. --- Washington State Patrol says 91-year-old Gordon Haines was attempting to make a left turn from 64th Avenue onto Ahtanum Road, and failed to yield to a semi-truck carrying apples in the opposite lane.

Both cars collided at the intersection.

Haines was pronounced dead at the scene

Authorities say drivers should be more wary, with so many trucks traveling on local roads during the harvest season.

"So it's important that people understand that you need to yield to these trucks, because they can't stop very quickly. They have a lot of weight involved with the apple products, and they cannot stop as quickly as a car," said Sergeant Patrick Ditter.

The truck driver was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
