Hermiston awards $17 million sewer plant contract

Hermiston City Councilors picked a contractor Monday night to perform approximately $17 million of work at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

Slayden Construction Group, Inc. submitted the lowest responsible bid to perform the plant improvement portion of the city’s Recycled Water Plant project.

The bid of $17,192,897 came in more than 15% less than engineers initially estimated for the project.

“This is good news for rate-payers, because ultimately, this thing gets paid for through rates,” Brookshier said.

If the contract award isn’t contested by any of the other bidders, construction on the plant improvement project may start as early as January or February, 2013, with completion expected in late 2014.

The portion of the project approved by the council Monday does not include the outfall works, which will discharge the city’s effluent to the Umatilla River.

That portion of the project is estimated at approximately $2 million.
