District 5 Fire Station Ribbon Cutting

A new fire department opens its doors to the Yakima Valley Today.

Dozens gathered for the ribbon cutting of the new Yakima County Fire District 5 Station.

The 5 thousand square foot building is replacing two outdated buildings in Sawyer and Buena --- it brings 15 volunteer firefighters from both those stations under one roof.

One firefighter says combining both buildings will improve firefighting efforts.

"It will give us a better response time, hopefully it will give us a better team. Because we will be all together. Training together is a big issue. So we'll have a better team to respond to whatever incidents we have to," said Captain Greg Babcock.

Construction on the building began in January, and cost about 900 thousand dollars.
