Walla Walla Moves On, Richland Falls in State 4A Softball
One struck early and held on late. The other fell in a hole early and could not climb out.
Walla Walla softball will play for a second consecutive state title later today with an 8-6 victory over a resilient Jefferson High (Auburn) team. Jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first off two Blue Devil home runs, Walla Wall would add four more to make it 6-0 by the end of the third.
But there would be no quit in Jefferson. In the bottom of the sixth, the Raiders would begin their comeback. A hit batter, a blooper to right and a solid double to left by Lexi Goranson would score 2. After loading the bases, a fielder's choice would make it 6-3 leaving runners on second and third. Katie Jackson would score two more Alyson Ambler would regroup for Walla Walla to get the final out of the inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Blue Devils put together a rally to score two more making the score 8-5. At the bottom of the inning, despite an error, Ambler would give up only one more run, sending the Blue Devils to tonight's championship game in Spokane at 5pm versus Woodinville.
Woodinville jumped all over Richland starter, Paige Goulet. The Falcons jumped all over Goulet in the first inning and never looked back. Goulet would give up seven runs in the first inning. She would keep Woodinville off the board until she was replaced in the fifth inning.
As for the Bombers offense, they could not manage much against Falcons' starter, Madi Schreyer. A minor threat in the third amounted to nothing. Managing only one run in the fifth, Richland could not keep Woodinville off the board as the Falcons would score four in the bottom of the fifth for the 11-1 victory.
Richland is scheduled to play Monroe in the consolation bracket at 1pm.
