Kidnapped Hermiston Woman Safe With Family
Melody Mickel, 26, is now safe with family after authorities shot the man who had kidnapped her during a standoff in Crescent Lake, OR.
Alberto Martinez, 28, kidnapped Mickel, her ex-girlfriend, on Thursday in the Rite Aid parking lot where Mickel works.
The standoff between the Oregon police SWAT team and Martinez at a cabin in Klamath County in Crescent Lake ended when Martinez came out with a knife close to Mickel's body.
The SWAT team shot Martinez in the head and Mickel was able to get away safely; Martinez's injury is not life threatening and he was treated at a Bend-area hospital.
Martinez is expected back in Umatilla County sometime between Wednesday and Thursday, and he will be charged by the end of the week.
People in Hermiston had been following the events pretty closely:
Angie Miller from Hermiston said, "I was surprised, thankful, but very surprised and its just, I can't imagine being her family and not knowing and I'm sure that they were incredibly grateful."
Rondi South, Hermiston said, "I felt horrible for the girl, I thought it was awful, I'd hate it if that were my kids or if it was me that that happened to."
