Kittitas County Bans Sky Lanterns
Kittitas County has placed a ban on the lighting or release of sky lanterns because of their potential to start fires.
Like hot air balloons, sky lanterns are lit with an open flame and, once released, are uncontrolled and become subject to air currents. They create a potential fire hazard if they come in contact with trees and buildings. Plus, depending on the device, they can burn from 5-15 minutes.
The ban is effective immediately and anyone found lighting or releasing sky lanterns could face a $500 fine.
