Nearly 1,000 people  are counted as homeless in Yakima County- mostly because they cant afford to pay rent or their mortgage.

According to the point in time survey released today- 966 people were found to be homeless this year. a 12 percent increase from last year.

Since 2011 new homeless programs have allowed for an additional 101 people to find shelter.

The homeless network says  youths make up nearly 30 percent of the homeless population- a number they think is too high.

"The youth number is probably the most concerning for us because those are the people that have the least amount of of resources available to them to help themselves," says Mike Murdock.

It was found the number one need of the homeless is job training and placement.

The survey was conducted in January of this year.
