Man Accused Of Fighting Yakima Police Officers

Early Saturday, Yakima Police Officers were investigating the location of a wanted person, when they came into contact with four male occupants of a parked vehicle on South 6th Street. They discovered one of the men was armed with a loaded pistol.

Police say despite orders given at gunpoint to keep his hands up, the man with the weapon made repeated attempts to reach for his pistol. He was removed from the car, and immediately began fighting officers. He was taken to the ground, after punching one of the officers. Once on the ground, he made an unsuccessful attempted to draw the officer's gun with the apparent intent to kill him.

After the suspect was taken into custody, it was learned that the other subjects in the car didn't know the suspect and gave him a ride out of courtesy. One witness stated that when the officers first approached, the suspect told him he was going to shoot the officers. The pistol was later discovered to have been stolen. The suspect had a prior record as an armed career criminal.
