Officer Involved Shooting in Yakima

The parking lot of Home Depot on first street is a crime scene- after an undercover drug bust erupts in gunfire-

Philip McBurnie went into Home Depot just before one o clock- and we he came out to his car- the parking lot was blocked off.

"Alot of police vehicles and the command center, and of course the crime scene tape. I was just curious" says McBurnie.

A total of 9 agents from Violent Crimes Task Force, the YPD, and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency were involved.

Officers say they were doing a buy-and-bust, where undercover officers buy drugs from a suspect and then arrest the suspect after the transaction is made.

After the deal was made- the suspect took off in a white minivan - officers say he drove toward one officer who felt he was in immediate danger and fired several times.

"As he was trying to escape, he made the decision to turn his vehicle in a deadly weapon and drove directly at one of the officers involved in the case, and the officer engaged in gun fire" says Captain Rod Light.

The suspect is an hispanic man in his early 20s.  He was shot multiple times and transported to a nearby hospital.
Police arrested another possible suspect at the scene, but his involvement remains unclear.

"There was no other occupant in the car- there was one other person taken into custody- what their participation was I dont know" says Light.

As Philip McBurnie looks at the scene next to his car- he still can't believe this happened during his trip to the hardware store.

"You're always thinking it'll never happen in your area, or near town. It can happen anywhere."

The suspect is in stable condition at the hospital.
