The Kittitas Reclamation District's irrigation canal flow in Elk Heights was reduced by half yesterday to allow crews to reinforce the main stem canal.

Crews say a lightning strike on Tuesday evening is suspected to have caused the canal control device to fail, shutting off parts of the irrigation system and causing the canal to overflow.

Crews are woking to reinforce a 100-foot length of hillside under and around the 20-foot wide canal, which is expected to go back into full service by next week.

In the meantime, officials say the work will mean many Lower Kittitas County irrigation customers may receive little to no water.
