Update: State Route 821 To Open Tomorrow

State route 821 between Yakima and Ellensburg is closed due to a large mudslide.
As crews cleaned up the mudslide today- they found a pleasant and unexpected surprise--the road underneath sustained only minor damage.
"When it starts it starts with a whole lot of water so far it looks pretty good it looks like our asphalt is pretty much intact which is good news," says Don Whitehouse from the WSDOT.
Over the past week- several mudslides have shut down state routes in our area-the DOT says the weather is to blame
"We haven't seen waters like this since 1998 was the last time that we had these gully washers that just came down and brought material off the hillside- so just kinda a unique weather pattern right now," says Don Whitehouse.
Crews opened one lane of the road today for emergency vehciles.
No cars were stuck and no one was injured last night.
Crews are hoping to open the road by tomorrow.
