Local Submariner Inducted into Holland Club
A former World War II submarine sailor, is honored for his service and inducted into the Holland Club on Saturday.
88-year-old Herb Brunkhorst enlisted in the Navy in 1942, serving aboard the USS Darter, the submarine that discovered and radioed the location of the Japanese main fleet.
That message that is considered to be one of the most important of the war, since Allies did not know the whereabouts of the Imperial Japanese Navy's fleet until then.
The Holland Club is an exclusive club whose members have been qualified in Submarines more than 50 years, and who are either Life Members the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc., or have been members for at least five consecutive years.
