A former inmate at Coyote Ridge Corrections Center in Connell is suing the state and 45 Department of Corrections employees, after he was beaten nearly to death by his cell mate.

48-year old Scott Mcdonald suffered a brain injury and loss of his left eye when he was attacked in 2009 with a cast iron smudge pot, which is a religious item used to burn sage.

His cellmate, 35-year old Kenneth Smith, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

In the lawsuit Mcdonald accuses the state and prison guards of failing to protect him from the attack.
