Kennewick Fire Chief Neil Hines announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency, in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration, has awarded an Assistance to Firefighter Grant to the Kennewick Fire Department.

The department has been approved for project costs totaling $151,494.

The Federal share is 80% or $121,196 of the approved amount, and the City will pay the remaining 20% or $30,298.

Fire Chief Hines said, “The grant award will be used to purchase Thermal Imaging Cameras and new structure firefighting protective gear. Thermal Imaging Cameras use infrared technology to allow firefighters to see through smoke and darkness to aid in quickly finding victims and identifying hidden fire within concealed spaces. The grant will also provide the City with the ability to place every firefighter into a set of new protective gear, providing our firefighters with the highest level of protection when working in the most extreme fire conditions.”
