Senate Passes Gay Marriage Bill

The Washington State Senate passes the gay marriage bill Wednesday night by a 28-21 vote. The bill now goes to the State House, where it is expected to pass easily. Governor Gregoire would then have five days to sign the legislation into law.

Any challenge to the bill, if passed into law, would have to come through the initiative/referendum process. Backers of any move to repeal the potential new law would have until June to collect the 120,557 signatures required to place a measure on the November ballot.
