The Hermiston community is mourning the loss of one of its leaders, after the city's longtime mayor Bob Severson, dies overnight after suffering a heart attack.

Everyone we spoke with in Hermiston today remembers Severson as a kind man who always made time to talk with community members.

In fact, almost everybody in Hermiston just called him Mayor Bob.

Severson, who was 80 years-old, died overnight at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland.

He was taken to the hospital last week after suffering a heart attack.

Severson had been serving the Hermiston community since 1995, when became a member of the city council.

He then became the mayor in 2001.

Community members say Severson has left a lasting impact on the community, as he was always working hard for more economic development, and he attended just about every community event.

"He was very, very kind, and this community will miss him immensley" said Fred Ziari, friend.

"He has left a legacy and one that we will always remember. Mayor Bob, even though he's gone, he's in our hearts" said Debbie Pedro, friend.

Community members say Severson helped the community grow to become the largest city in eastern Oregon.

Hermiston city council president, Jackie Myers is taking over as interim mayor until January.

Then, mayor-elect Dr. Dave Drotzmann will take over the position, as Severson did not run for re-election.
