New Groundwater Treatment Facility Operating at Hanford
A $230 million facility that will remove chemical and radioactive contaminants from groundwater at the Hanford site is now up and running.
During the Cold War, liquids contaminated with chemicals and radioactive elements from the production of plutonium were sent to several disposal sites at Hanford.
As a result, a five square mile area of groundwater was contaminated.
The new facility will keep that contaminated water from reaching the Columbia River.
