UPDATE: 2 dead following Naches River shooting
Yakima Police have identified one of two victims in Monday afternoon's shooting on the banks of the Naches River.
Officers were called to the scene about 4:25 p.m. -- it happened at the 16th Avenue exit on the Yakima Greenway.
The call was immediately updated to advise that at least one subject, a 17-year-old male, was down. Descriptions were provided of possible suspects who were fleeing the area of the shooting on foot. A responding officer located suspects matching the descriptions given as they were entering a vehicle in the parking lot and detained them.
Additional officers were directed to the scene of the shooting approximately ¼ mile west of N. 16th Avenue along the banks of the Naches River. Witnesses took officers and aid crews to the location of the shooting victim. He was transported away from the scene in an ambulance to receive treatment for gunshot wounds. (The first victim, the juvenile male, was later pronounced dead at the hospital).
Shortly after the first victim was taken away additional information was received from witnesses that there was a second shooting victim as well. A witness came back to the location and took officers a short distance to the second shooting victim, 18-year-old Jobany Martinez.
Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
A primary suspect was developed as the on-scene investigation continued, and was in fact one of four subjects detained by officer. The suspect, 19-year-old Lameiro Efren Flores was arrested and taken to the Yakima Police Department. After interviews with detectives Flores was booked into the Yakima County Jail. He will face murder charges for the shooting deaths of Martinez and the 17-year-old juvenile victim.
No other suspects are being sought related to this investigation. The investigation is on-going.
