OLYMPIA -- Little more than two weeks after major surgery to remove a thymoma tumor in his abdomen, Senate Republican Leader Mike Hewitt, R-Walla Walla, has been declared to be stage 1 “N.E.D.” – meaning “no evidence of disease.”

Hewitt made this comment regarding the news he received today during a follow-up visit with his surgeon: “I am obviously thrilled with the prognosis. I also thank the hundreds of people from around the state who contacted me after the surgery. Their prayers and well-wishes mean more to Cory and me than we can say.”

Because the tumor removed from Hewitt on April 2 was completely encapsulated, and there was absolutely no sign that disease had spread, he will not need chemotherapy or any other treatment.

For the next two years Hewitt will meet with his doctor every six months to confirm that he remains free from any trace of the tumor.  For the eight years after that he will only need an annual check-up.
